The best way to eat a cupcake is actually to eat smaller bits of many cupcakes, let’s say about a quarter of several others. This way you can sample a variety of flavors and always have more of those you like better. This is my process for enjoying delectable cupcakes.
Of all of the cupcakes I’ve encountered, Calandra’s Bakery in Northern NJ (locations in Fairfield and Caldwell) has the tastiest! At only $3 a pop, you are getting a whole lot of deliciousness in every savory bite.
Red velvet is one of their most popular and is definitely one of my personal favorites. The cream cheese frosting is just the right amount of sweetness and cream cheese. Most importantly, the cake to frosting ratio is spot on.
Other favorites of mine include: chocolate ganache and chocolate cannoli (also pictured above). The chocolate ganache is probably one of the best chocolate cupcakes out there. It is a chocolate cake topped with almost a chocolate fudge (but oh-so-much-better than fudge) and dipped in ganache topping. Seriously, it’s heaven if you like chocolate. And for those cannoli lovers out there, there are both the chocolate and regular cannoli cupcakes. Chocolate is the winner for me – the regular cannoli shell coating tends to lose it’s crunch after a day in the fridge (as regular cannoli shells tend to), that’s why I prefer the chocolate coated ones. Or maybe, it’s just that I’m such a chocolate lover.
The caramel (pictured) is pretty darn great too. The buttercream frosting is okay on it’s own, but adding the caramel layer with a slight crunch is what really takes the cake. It’s all with a light vanilla cake, almost like an angel food cake.
The carrot cake is also delicious, as feedback from others in my family, since I’ve never been one to enjoy carrot cake. However, any of the cupcakes with cream cheese frosting are delectable. There are also other delightful cupcake flavors like oreo, peanut butter, pistachio, coconut, and chocolate mousse.
You really can’t go wrong with any of the cupcakes from Calandra’s as they are the tastiest treats for a reasonable price. So the next time you’re in Norther NJ, definitely stop by and pick up a box of cupcakes to share.
P.S. The pastries, food, bread, and everything else at Calandra’s is also freaking delicious, but I think the cupcakes are the most exquisite of everything.
Have you experienced Calandra’s deliciousness? Which cupcake is your favorite? Where should I travel next for the best cupcakes in your state?
